Our favorite cast iron statue is helping Birmingham celebrate the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote for all you history buffs out there!

If you haven’t visited Vulcan Park’s current exhibit entitled, “Right or Privilege? Alabama Women and the Vote,” you’re missing out. There will also be a theatrical performance based on the exhibit. Talk about history coming alive!

Local History Come to Life

Pattie and Josephine: Waiting in Alabama is a one-act, two-person play following the story of Pattie Ruffner Jacobs and her friend, Josephine. The play follows these two women–each a different race–as their lives intertwine while fighting for women’s voting rights.

This dramatic performance, written by Lee Shackleford and directed by Melissa “Mel” Christian, will take the audience on a trip deep into the not-too-distant past to shine a light on racial and gender voting discrimination.

This one act play is one day only with two performances: Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 2:00 and 6:00. Tickets are $8 for Vulcan members and $10 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased here.

Don’t Forget the Exhibit

In addition, don’t forget to check out the exhibit spotlighting the topic that inspired this play. Jennifer Watts, Director of Museum Programs, hopes this exhibit will highlight the suffrage movement. She also sees it as a way to remember those who championed this privilege and remind visitors just how important their vote really is.

“This exhibit will commemorate this milestone of democracy in our country and explore the relevance of it today,” Watts said. “It’s an opportunity for us to have a local conversation about the contributions of women not only in the past but here in the present.”

Entrance to the exhibition is included with general admission to Vulcan Park & Museum.
