I’d like to think that I am somewhat of a carb specialist. I know where all the good bread and pastry places are. I even know some of the people who bake goods on the side. Also, I may or may not have—but definitely did—told my husband to place an order for $50 worth of chocolate eclairs from a friend of a coworker today. I even staged at one of the best patisseries in San Francisco. So, I feel uniquely qualified to compile this list of bakeries in Birmingham.
*Please note that I only featured shops that fit the definition of bakery by producing both sweet and savory items.
Last Call Baking Co.
213 25th Street North, Suite A, Birmingham, 35203
(205) 601-2564
Thursday-Friday 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
I first heard of Last Call Baking Co. when the owner, Chanah Willis, was still selling pastry boxes out of her apartment. If you’re into Instagram-worthy food, this bakery is for you! Come in expecting something different each week, as the flavors often change, and know they often sell out! So, get there early!
Continental Bakery
1909 Cahaba Rd., Birmingham, 35223
(205) 870-5584
Open 7 Days 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
This is a true Birmingham classic! This Bakery is in Mountain Brook’s English Village and is known for their traditional European breads. As a French citizen, I can attest to the quality of Continental’s baguettes and croissants. Insider tip- It’s a great place to grab snacks for the kids (and coffee for mom) before heading to the Zoo or Botanical Gardens located nearby.
Birmingham Breadworks

(205) 933-7517
Monday-Saturday 6:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Located in downtown Birmingham, Breadworks serves both breakfast and lunch. Their lunches include soups, salads, pizza, and sandwiches. Come for the bread, but stay for the pizza!
Edgar’s Bakery
Multiple Locations in the Birmingham Area
Hours vary, closed on Sunday
There’s a good chance that there’s an Edgar’s near you! Their multiple locations feature an array of baked goods, as well as deli options. I think everyone knows and loves their strawberry cake!!
Panaderia y Pasterleria La Conchita Hoover
3309 Lorna Road, Hoover, 35216
(205) 536-6541
Open 7 Days 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
La Conchita is a Mexican bakery and ice cream shop located off Lorna Road. The store sports an array of savory and sweet items, varying from bread to cakes. I love to get a small slice of Tres Leches cake while my kids prefer the paletas (a more cream-based ice pop using natural ingredients).
Savage’s Bakery

(205) 871-4901
Tuesday–Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Located in Downtown Homewood, this bakery is also a deli. Most loved for their Iced Smiley Face Cookies, this store is a nice treat to enjoy while walking around the area with the kiddos. Homewood Toy & Hobby and The Little Professor are just a short walk away, too!
Bandit Patisserie

Saturday-Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Owned by the Chefs of The Essential, this small shop features an assortment of baked items, ranging from macarons to sandwiches. A pastry from Bandit is the perfect accessory for binge watching The Great British Bake Off; they’ve even been known to feature pop tarts!
