Birmingham

Hey, hey, hey Birmingham Moms! I was born and raised in Fairfield, AL. More than 16 years ago, after graduating from Stillman College and a brief stint in Michigan, I moved to Birmingham and began a family with my husband, Kelvin. My love for the city of Birmingham runs deep. The food, family appeal, and did I mention the food? are at the top of my list. Even though our beloved city is not as big as other cities in surrounding states (which I love most), it still offers the quality and excitement of a largely populated city. The quaintness is what appeals to me and my family most. From cultural events to sporting rivalries, Birmingham’s quaintness is perfect for someone to begin and nurture a family. There’s also plenty to do for a mom who wants to enjoy family-friendly time together or if she wants a night out with her girls.

Birmingham offers southern style with big city vibes. As a child, I loved seeing the countryside with roaming cows, horses, and rivers along with tall buildings all on a Sunday after-church, afternoon drive. Now that I get to drive my children around on a leisure ride, I can see how the city has grown and developed, and it makes me proud. Driving up 20th Street South and parking at the base of our steel giant, Vulcan, is one of the most beautiful spots to see our gorgeous city.

Mom

I am a mom to two children, nine-year-old Zachary and seven-year-old Zoe, and they make motherhood so easy for me. I love the time that we spend together as my work schedule has allowed me to be more flexible, resulting in more mommy moments with my two little humans. Though some days can be challenging, like dividing time with them equally, I’m learning new ways every day on how to be the best mom for them.

I’ve enjoyed working in human services and career development, but life has led me in a new direction as a college Psychology instructor and doctoral candidate. When I’m not in school, with friends and family, or volunteering at Sardis Missionary Baptist Church, I’m talking and blogging about travel and Disney . . . mostly Disney, though! My love for Disney led me to create Your Disney Homegirlwhich is my platform to encourage more Black families and families of color to get a taste of what Disney offers through their vacations, educational programs, and business conferences. My love for Disney has trickled into my children crowning me the “most magical mom in the Magic City!”

Collective

This “magical momma” can’t wait to share with the Birmingham Mom Collective community what the Magic City offers for families and moms who are looking for a night out with her girls or me time. Not only am I elated to share my perspective on motherhood in the Magic City, but to learn from my fellow contributors, too. There’s plenty of magic to go around for everyone!

Korliss D
Born and raised just outside of Birmingham in Fairfield, AL, Korliss is married to Kelvin and they have a 9-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter. She spent her college years in Tuscaloosa at Stillman College, until she moved to Michigan to attend graduate school, but eventually found her way back to Birmingham. Korliss has enjoyed working in human services and career development, but now she loves her experience in education as a college Psychology instructor and doctoral candidate. When she’s not in school, with friends or volunteering at her church, Sardis Missionary Baptist Church, she’s talking and blogging about travel and Disney…mostly Disney, though! She was selected as a 2016 panelist for the Disney Parks Moms Panel, now planDisney, to help families create magical experiences while on a Disney vacation. From that, she decided to create Your Disney Homegirl, which is her platform to encourage more Black families and families of color to get a taste of what Disney offers through their vacations, educational programs, and business conferences.
