Birmingham Moms Blog :: Introducing Tawanna

Hi to all of the Beautiful, Heartfelt, Audacious, Magnificent (BHAM) moms! I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Illinois — GO WHITE SOX!!! I graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (20 minutes from St. Louis Metropolitan area) with my Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Public Administration and Policy Analysis. My family and I moved to Birmingham in July of 2017.

Birmingham

Christmas of 1985, holding my favorite Cabbage Patch Doll.

Being a city girl is amazing, I enjoy the energy of the city life, the lights, the sounds, and the non-stop activities! But every now and then, I hear nature calling me and I can escape to its quietness to slow down and disconnect from the noise. Birmingham gives me the best of both worlds. I am captivated by Birmingham’s beautiful mountains of trees, the gorgeous weather, and the amazing food! It has truly been a warm welcome. I have taken a hike in the amazing Oak Mountains and escaped to Aldridge Gardens with my husband to walk, talk, and feed the fish and turtles. Birmingham’s downtown is evolving. I enjoy dinner at Pies and Pints, walking the trail at Railroad Park, and Barons baseball games.

Bonded by LOVE

I truly believe my children are gifts from God, and I take my role as their mom seriously. For 10 years, it was just me and my babies; my why. Being a single mom requires a superpower from God. The early days and late nights . . . more month than money . . . tear-stained pillows. With a thankful heart and a focus on my why, we overcame the odds. I had promotions at work, a strong tribe of women, and determination to succeed no matter what! Our world was perfect, so I thought. In 2015, God reconnected my husband, Dion, and me after 23 years. We are childhood sweethearts that lived in the same neighborhood in Chicago. Dion brought calmness and unconditional support into our family. We married in September 2017, and became a family filled with love and laughter. We have two children: a boy, 13, who loves all things Marvel and a girl, 7, who is truly our fashionista.

Blog

All because of LOVE…

I love reading blogs: personal development, do-it-yourself, fashion, and cooking. When we moved to Birmingham, I immediately searched for a blog that would give me information about kid-friendly activities, pediatricians, and family dental offices. The Birmingham Moms Blog (BMB) was the first website to pop up and continues to be my first source to learn about all things BHAM. I am truly thankful for the opportunity to be a contributor with BMB. As a contributor, I will share my family trials and triumphs as a mom of a blended family, my adventures in Birmingham, and my love of inspiring and empowering women to embrace their authentic greatness.

She and her children moved to Hoover in July 2017 and married her childhood sweetheart, Dion, in September 2017. As a blended family, they are a wonderful mix bonded by love and laughter. When Tawanna and Dion are not chauffeuring their 13-year-old son to basketball practice and their 7-year old daughter to Girl Scout meeting, they enjoy taking walks in a park, trying a new restaurant for date night, or cuddling on the couch watching a movie. Tawanna works full-time as a training and communication specialist for a healthcare organization. When she has some downtime, she enjoys getting pedicures, shopping at Target, and going to the movies with her family.
