Birmingham
Over dinner at our favorite restaurant, my husband Tony broke the news that we would be moving to Birmingham, Alabama for his medical residency by playing the iconic song “Stars Fell on Alabama” through ear buds hidden in his coat pocket. We were newly pregnant with our firstborn when we packed up our home in San Antonio, Texas to move to Homewood, Alabama where we lived in a tiny cottage until completing residency. After residency we moved to Jacksonville, Florida for Tony’s surgical fellowship. Upon completion of fellowship, we moved back to Birmingham, where we now live in Liberty Park.
Not long after moving to Birmingham, I discovered that the “South” in “South Texas” is quite different than the “South” used to describe Birmingham. Trading Tex-Mex for “meat and threes” has been an adjustment, but I am now proud to call Birmingham “home”. Our family loves the small town feel of Birmingham while enjoying all its big city offerings.
Moms
I am a mother to four unique children, Ana Sophia (age 11), Vincent (age 10), Luisa (age 6), and Grace (age 3). While my motherhood journey is defined by many events — the birth of each child, choosing to become a stay-at-home mom after working as a speech therapist, pursuing my passion for writing while managing a busy household — becoming a mother to a special needs daughter has proven to be one of my greatest challenges. At 20 months of age our daughter Luisa was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare, severe neurological disease that affects her ability to talk, walk, and carry out all activities of daily living.
I consider motherhood a calling, and each day presents a unique set of challenges. Yet, I delight in the opportunity to shepherd my four children in their journeys from childhood to adulthood.
Blog
I am humbled and excited to be a contributor to Birmingham Moms Blog. I value authenticity and transparency in writing and hope to reflect those characteristics as I explore the daily, ordinary tasks of motherhood as well as the challenging aspects of parenting a special needs child. Mothers need to be encouraged as they work tirelessly for those entrusted in their care. I hope through my writing to offer that encouragement.
