Birmingham

“You want us to move where?” I am positive that was my response when I was first presented with the idea of moving from Indianapolis to Birmingham just over three years ago. Born and raised in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin, I attended college and then worked in Indiana. My roots had planted firm in the Midwest.

The idea of relocating so far south, away from family and friends, was both exciting and scary at the same time.

We took our first house hunting trip and quickly knew exactly where we wanted to settle. Hoover has been a blessing from the moment we pulled up to the house with the giant moving truck. A true neighborly spirit welcomed us and has made all the difference in our transition to life in the South.

After three years, there are still things about Southern culture that I just don’t understand. I will never enjoy a sweet tea, but I thoroughly enjoy the amenities and friendships our neighborhood provides every single day. It makes being so far from family a little easier.

I met my now husband while serving up frozen treats at a local ice cream shop during college at Purdue University. We have been married for 13 years with four Purdue degrees between the two of us. We are parents to two energetic and sometimes dramatic daughters, ages nine and six.

Immediately after college I began my career working in collegiate athletics. As the leader of the marketing and game presentation efforts on a college campus, my job is anything but a traditional nine-to-five. I spend my days, nights, and weekends making UAB Athletics events fun, family entertainment for the residents of Birmingham and beyond to enjoy.

My girls have been exposed to sporting events of all kinds and have picked up on the traditions and passions of students, alumni, and fans. They love cheering on our favorite teams including the Badgers, the Boilermakers, and of course the Blazers!

As my career has progressed, finding time to juggle all of the things on the home-front is a challenge. School activities, kids sports, homework, play dates, birthday parties, bed times, business travel, and keeping a house suitable for living is enough to make a working mom lose her mind regularly.

Our family created systems and routines to keep our lives moving forward. A good calendar tool is a must. As a working mom with non-traditional hours, I strive for proportion in my life. Balance is just not always realistic. I also married a fantastic chef, so I have zero responsibility for the meals in our home. Trust me, that is best for everyone.

Parenting is about making decisions, all day, every day, for the people who are the center of our universe. The truth is that unlike my business environment, I did not take a college course in parenting strategy. I do not have an advanced degree in speaking toddler tantrum or tween emotions. Surely I am not the only one who feels like this, right?

In March of 2018, I launched Her Generation Project to find mothers out there like me, doing my best but questioning. The purpose of the Project is to build a network of girl moms and create a library of situations moms encounter with their daughters. To build honest and judgement-free connections, for both support and commiserating because parenting is hard. And it is okay to admit it.

Birmingham Moms Blog is a great resource for local moms to connect and share their experiences. Parenting doesn’t have to mean recreating the wheel in every situation when you can find a great network of fellow parents to share experiences, opinions, and advice with on a regular basis. I look forward to sharing my family’s experiences in the Magic City with you. If you parent with a healthy dose of sarcasm, think the drive-thru was designed with you in mind, or have daughters that fill you with equal measure of love and anxiety, I am here for you.
