Birmingham

Hi! I am so excited to be a part of the Birmingham Moms Blog, BMB! My name is Alli, and I am a Birmingham native who was raised just outside the city in the suburb of Hoover. I was born at the same hospital where I gave birth to my own children, Brookwood Medical Center! Birmingham is such a fun and diverse city to raise a family in, and I feel very blessed to now be raising my own little people right here in the Magic City. Birmingham truly is the best of a big city feel and the comforts of a small town. There is so much to do, see, and eat in and around Birmingham while also having several community-centered neighborhoods that make you feel like you are still in a smaller town. As a mom, I am so grateful for the many entertainment options that keep my boys busy. We are frequent visitors to the McWane Science Center, the Birmingham Zoo, and Birmingham Museum of Art, as well as many nature areas such as Ruffner Mountain and Oak Mountain State Park. If you have ever had little kids in the car on the verge of naptime meltdowns, then you will also appreciate the fact that Birmingham does not have nearly as much traffic as other cities, and this alone will also save your sanity from being stuck in traffic with a melting down kid(s)!

As great as all the places and things are in B’ham, it is really the people of our city that make it the “Magic City.” As a mommy, you sometimes feel like you are on a constant first date, trying to meet new moms and make friends. My experience as a brand-new mom who felt a touch lonely in my new world of bibs and burp cloths, also found that the moms in Birmingham are kind, generous, warm, and quick to offer friendship. It is not uncommon for sweet passersby to smile at my family or offer a hand to help when I am juggling a baby and shopping bags. The “Magic” of our city lies mostly in all the friendly faces and welcoming arms you find in Birmingham.

Moms

I am the mom to my four boys ages 8,6,4, and 3. Yes, I had four kids in 5 years and although that makes me crazy, I absolutely love having them close in age! I love being a mom for so many reasons but mainly because it just feels like something I was always meant to become. I am not a perfect mom; if you hang around long enough you will hear me yell at my kids and lose my patience a lot!  However, I feel like being a mommy suits me, and I love the simplest tasks of packing their school lunches to the more complex tasks of helping mend their hearts when a friend hurts their feelings. Motherhood pushes you to be the best version of yourself in a way that nothing else truly can.

Challenges, my oh my, how many challenges motherhood brings! Just when you think the list can’t go on anymore, it does! I find myself facing many of the same challenges as most moms, such as keeping my house clean, making sure my kids don’t eat just donuts for dinner, and wondering if they will ever sleep alone in their beds. I also have a son who was born with a rare blood disorder and was diagnosed with kidney cancer at the age of four. He is now cancer-free, but we still face challenges from our cancer journey and his blood disorder that are unique. Sometimes the small challenges can feel just as big as the very big ones, though! Depends on the day and how much coffee I have consumed!

Blog

I am excited to be a Birmingham Moms Blog contributor because I love to connect with other moms! There is such a community among moms. When you hear “It takes a village,” I think that the village now is often blogs, social media, and probably even our iPhones that help bring us that sense of togetherness and sense of, I can do this! I am excited to bring my voice as a semi-seasoned mom of boys to the table and hope to share some posts that might make you feel more like you can do this thing we call motherhood. I am sure I, too, will need to re-convince myself of that many times over. Thank you for allowing me into your village. I already consider you my mommy friend!

Alli is a Birmingham native who always knew she wanted to be a mommy to many, but had no idea that would turn into many little boys! While being a "boy mom" was not what she expected, you will now find her trudging through the woods and happily exploring everything "outdoors" with her brood of little men. Happily married to a builder, you might find that her Google searches reveal a never-ending list of home improvements, which leads to lots of screen shots and "Let's do this next" text messages. When not chasing around her boys, you can find her off on a long run, drinking coffee, going out for a girls' night, or wandering the aisles of the most wonderful place on earth, Target.
