Birmingham Moms Blog :: Introducing Rebekah

Hi, Birmingham Moms! My name is Rebekah. I am pretty new to Birmingham, marriage, and motherhood, but I’m absolutely loving it all! So far, motherhood has been filled with many successes and failures, and I look forward to sharing some of them with y’all here on the Birmingham Moms Blog!

Birmingham

I grew up in Boca Raton, Florida, and after high school made my way to Jackson, Mississippi where I attended Belhaven University and majored in elementary education.

During my senior year a cute Southern boy introduced me to the wonderful city of Birmingham and the great little school, Evangel Classical Christian School. A little over a year later, I moved to Birmingham, got a job as a fourth grade teacher at the great little school, and married that cute Southern boy. We bought our first home in Calera and had our first baby boy in 2013 and our second in 2015.

I haven’t lived here long, but it’s safe to say that the life-changing “firsts” I’ve experienced in that short time have caused my roots to sink deep into the City of Birmingham.

What I find most endearing about this city is that it is filled with so many thriving churches with many young moms like me who encourage each other in the difficult and amazing task of motherhood. My faith in Jesus Christ is the most important thing to me. It’s who I am and it’s the reasoning behind every decision I make in life, marriage, and motherhood. My family and I are members at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, and it’s been a tremendous blessing in our lives. I love that I get to raise my family here!

Moms

Growing up, I was the little girl who was always playing with baby dolls and pretending to be the mommy. Now I am the mommy, and it’s safe to say it’s not exactly what I imagined it would be like when I was seven!

I was the second oldest child in my family of six girls and no boys. Our house was all girls, all the time! I always imagined that when I became a mommy I would be the mother of several blue-eyed, blonde-haired little girls like my sisters and myself. Fast-forward to the present, and now I am the only woman in our house and I am the mother of two miniature Tarzan boys who probably have more in common with a WWII tank than they do with me! Again, not exactly what I expected!

Motherhood may not be what I expected, but it is GREATER than I expected. It is also harder than I expected, more hilarious than I had imagined, more rewarding than I could have dreamt, faster-paced than I thought possible, and lonelier than I had hoped. But more than all those things, it is lovelier and, truly, greater.

My two boys look a lot alike, but they couldn’t be more opposite in personality. My oldest, Graham (3), is my spunky, strong-willed child who hugs strangers at Target and cries when they walk away; he can fill a room with giggles in a moment and usually sings himself to sleep at night. Caleb (1) is my sweet, steady, and shy little guy who can entertain himself with a single Daniel Tiger toy all afternoon, eat a truck-load of Veggie Straws, and can also win any wrestling match against his big brother. (He cheats and goes for the hair!)

I love being a mom! These little boys keep me on my toes, and I’m so thankful for the love and support of my husband, Landon. He comforts and encourages me in the daily trials and joys of motherhood. He is the rock of our family.

Blog

I’m excited for the launch of the Birmingham Moms Blog and I look forward to being a contributor. I hope to encourage other young moms and form some new friendships for myself and my children.

While I do consider myself to be a stay-at-home mom, I also teach outside of the home for four hours a week. My husband and I made the decision to homeschool our children during their preschool and elementary years, and I have a passion to make learning an enjoyable part of their young lives so I teach mostly through play, song, and movement. We also love to cuddle up and read books, and honestly, some days we just end up in front of the TV too. I look forward to sharing some of my preschool ideas with the BMB readers in the next few months!

Rebekah McKee is a Florida girl who married an Alabama boy and set up a home in Calera. She has been wife to Landon for 5 years and spends her days as a stay-at-home mom to her two little, adventurous boys, Graham (3) and Caleb (1). She aspires to be a super-mom and is finding that much harder than originally planned; secretly, she feels like keeping two toddler boys alive, and relatively happy, makes her one. Rebekah was once an elementary school teacher and hopes to continue teaching by homeschooling her children. Her favorite days are the simple ones spent at home with her tribe of toddlers; reading books, singing songs, playing outside, and doing simple preschool activities. She loves all holidays and desires to make them all memorable. Most importantly, she strives to share her love for God's Word and teach it to her children in all that they do together.
