Birmingham

Hi, y’all! My name is Julie and I moved to Birmingham from New Orleans in June 2018 with my husband and son. We’ve only been in the Magic City for a couple of months, but we have already fallen in love with Birmingham and we’re constantly discovering new places to explore. While I’ve always adored the South (although my hair does not care much for this humidity), I’m a Southern transplant as I grew up in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. College, grad school, med school, residency, and life in general have given me the opportunity to live all over our great country and am now proud to call Homewood my new home! I appreciate the quick access to everything offered within a larger city, but love the small town feel within Birmingham’s individual neighborhoods. The rolling hills, the streets shaded with lush trees, and the friendly people greeting each other with their thick southern drawls make the ‘Ham a wonderful place to live. Add in a few frozen treats from Steel City Pops, the splash pad at the Birmingham zoo and a few tickets to a Barons game and one will find herself in a city ideal for raising kids! My favorite event so far in Birmingham was 80’s night at the zoo; my son and I went as Rainbow Brite and Twink! (see photo – rocking the “mom style” complete with a teething necklace).

I met my husband when we were in medical school and we started dating on 11/18/2009. Exactly two years later, we said “I do” and were married on 11/18/2011. Although I’ve been looking forward to a practicing career as a physician since high school, the role I really wanted to take on was the one with the title of “Mom!” I assumed we’d start having kids right away, but we had to delay it a few years when my husband and I found out we had to live apart for over three years for residency. I matched to my residency program in Kansas City, while he matched to his residency in New Orleans. That was a challenge, but absence DOES make the heart grow fonder — I’ll probably write more about this in future blog posts! However, I had the privilege of joining the “mom club” last September when our son James was born.

In addition to being a wife and mom, I’m also a physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physician at UAB Hospital/Spain Rehabilitation Center and recently took a bold leap and ventured into the world of children’s book writing. My first book on amputation/limb deficiency was published last year with the plan to write a whole series for children on various disabilities. My goal is to teach kids that it is OK to be different, and I will likely base many of my blog posts on topics pertaining to children with special needs.
