Birmingham Moms Blog :: Introducing Jennifer W

Hello, fellow Magic City moms! My name is Jennifer, and I am thrilled to be a part of Birmingham Moms Blog!

Birmingham

My family has only been in Birmingham a short time, and it’s a move I will never forget! When my youngest daughter was just two weeks old, my husband interviewed for a job at UAB. When she was three weeks old, he got the offer. And when she was one month old, he moved to Birmingham while my daughters and I stayed in South Carolina to put our house on the market and tie up loose ends.

It was the hardest month of my life.

I was alone with a newborn and an 18-month-old, coming to terms with the fact that we were uprooting our family and moving to a place I had never been before. I knew deep down it was an amazing career opportunity for my husband, and I never doubted that it was the right move. Still, that didn’t make it any easier for my postpartum self!

After somehow surviving that month, the girls and I joined my husband in Birmingham in October 2016. We are still settling in and getting our bearings, but I couldn’t be happier with our decision to move here. It seems like a wonderful place to raise a family, and I love exploring our new city every chance I get!

Moms

I’m a mom to Brooklyn (2 years) and Blakely (6 months). My husband and I never thought having girls was in the cards for us; he has two brothers, I have two brothers, and I was the first girl born into my family in over a century. I also begged my mom for a sister, and when each younger brother was born, I apparently gave her the silent treatment for several weeks each time. Looking back, I don’t know how we would have handled another girl in our house, and the bond I have with my brothers is unbreakable. God must have a sense of humor, deciding to bless my husband and me with two little girls. They truly are amazing. I absolutely love watching them absorb the world around them, and I’m starting to see their little personalities develop.

My biggest challenge is having confidence in myself as a mother, especially since my husband is on the road quite a bit for work. Also, dealing with a baby and a toddler simultaneously is something you can’t really prepare for! I call my own mother for guidance about 37 times a day. I also have regular panic attacks when I think about dealing with them as teenagers.

Blog

I am so excited to be a Birmingham Moms Blog contributor because Ilove to write and share my own experiences, usually with a humorous twist. After all, none of us really knows what we’re doing, and as my grandmother told me before I had my first baby, “You gotta learn as you go.” Being a newcomer to Birmingham and going through such a big life change with small kids will give me the opportunity to share a different view of the Magic City, and I look forward to connecting with other local moms who will hopefully become friends.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
