Real Food Review :: The Alabama Biscuit Company

1

In case you missed my introduction post, I am excited to be sharing with you my Birmingham dining experiences and options for people with different allergies or diets. My posts will also feature some of my favorite easy and yummy recipes that are great for busy moms and picky kids!

To begin, I am sharing with you my favorite place to eat in Birmingham, The Alabama Biscuit Company. I ate here so much when I was pregnant that my mom started calling my baby “Biscuit”, and when we found out we were having a girl, the name stuck. Alabama Biscuit was started by Jonathan and his wife Meredith with a goal to provide real and nourishing food for their family. Their biscuits are made of the ancient grain spelt. Spelt does contain gluten, but it is a different molecular build than that of modern day wheat, so many people who cannot tolerate wheat or are gluten-free can eat spelt. I have a wheat allergy and have no problems with the spelt biscuits. Jonathan has very high standards for the food he brings into the restaurant; he seeks to source as many organic and local ingredients as he can. His dairy products are grass-fed, and he uses natural sweeteners such as coconut sugar, maple syrup, and honey, rather than processed white sugar. Everything is fresh and there are no preservatives, artificial flavors, or artificial colors.

A few menu suggestions:

My favorite // The Croque Madame (with scrambled egg) with an unsweet iced tea

Paleo & vegan option // Organic Grainless Granola with dairy-free milk (They typically have a cashew or oat milk on hand.)

Gluten-free option // Pecan or Almond Butter Bar. I could eat these things all day, every day! Made from their house-made pecan or almond butter and sweetened with coconut sugar.

If you’re super hungry (aka what my husband eats) // Biscuits and Gravy

On-the-go // Almond Butter and Jelly (The house-made organic blueberry is delicious and is sweetened with maple syrup.)

Classic // The Standard with Honey — you can never go wrong with going simple. The spelt biscuit with local honey is a delicious combination and melts in your mouth.

Drink // My husband’s favorite coffee in town is at The Alabama Biscuit. They take great care to brew a good cup of coffee, and they also offer cold brew. Their Cashew Milk Latte is delicious and also a great non-dairy option.

Don’t miss // The Oatmeal! Best oatmeal I have ever had. Topped with pecans and a maple butter sauce. It fills me up for the day and is also another great gluten-free option.

The Alabama Biscuit Co. is located at 4133 White Oak Drive in Cahaba Heights and is open seven days a week until 2:00 in the afternoon. They are opening a second location at the Pizitz Food Hall in April.

Note: Whenever dining out, make sure to let your server know of your allergies and ask any questions you may have about the menu.
