My “Momiform” :: The Outfit that Changed My Life

2

Momiform
. . . it’s a funny word that you might have heard someone reference or you might have seen it floating around in the blog world. It is a combination of the words “mom” and “uniform”. If you’re thinking it consists of baggy jeans and a grimy t-shirt, you’re wrong! The “momiform” is a simple, stylish, go-to outfit that looks great and is at the same time appropriate for day-to-day mom tasks. This little trick has been so helpful for me in getting dressed in the morning and feeling confident throughout my busy days. Whether you’re aware of it or not, I’d guess that most of you moms reading this are actually wearing your very own momiform right now!

How I found my momiform

Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, my daily look was a pencil skirt and heels. It was easy and perfect for my office job. During pregnancy and soon after our son was born, I went through a bit of a style crisis. Not only did my work-wear wardrobe not fit my body (or at least, it just wasn’t the same), it really didn’t fit my lifestyle anymore either. Instead of brainstorming sessions, printer jams, and coffee runs, my days became a 180-degree change of nursing and caring for a baby, then on to the very active toddler phase. In addition, we started traveling and living on the road for weeks at a time for my husband’s job. I needed a better system with my wardrobe — one that wouldn’t leave me in tears every time I opened my closet.

Being a lover of all things organization, and having tried lots of different things like the 10-item wardrobe, French women’s style, Kon-Mari, etc., I knew there had to be something suitable for my dilemma. It finally clicked for me when I realized that I was consistently reaching for the same white boyfriend blouse and my favorite high-rise skinny jeans. I felt good and the most like myself in that outfit. It was an “aha” moment, for sure. I had found my momiform! It was easily attainable and sensible enough for whatever the day threw at me. I had also unintentionally settled on a blue and white color scheme, something that always feels so crisp and Southern to me. Mixing and matching (and packing my suitcase) had never been easier.

The Momiform 101

Here are a few tips and frequently asked “momiform” questions (FAMQ):

There are so many great ideas out there! Truly something for every mom. I would start by searching Pinterest or clicking on the Instagram hashtag. You probably already have a good idea of what is comfortable and what you like to wear. Most moms I know start with jeans or more casual with leggings or joggers. Anything can be a jumping off point — a favorite style of pants, your most flattering colors, a brand that you love to wear.

So, do you wear anything other than your momiform?

Of course! My momiform occupies about half of my wardrobe, and the other half includes sundresses, skirts, jumpsuits, and workout gear. You’ll typically find me wearing jeans and a neutral top, but I wear jeans in different styles and washes, and the top can be a button-down, t-shirt, or tank top, in varying patterns, too. That is more than enough variety for me in this current season of my life.

Is this only a stay-at-home mom thing?

Not at all! This works for anyone who wants to simplify their life and, more specifically, their closet. The “uniform” method works for almost anything; I buy all of my athletic clothing in black; it’s one less excuse for me when I’m trying to get to the gym on time! Brilliant people choose to wear the same thing every day as a way to improve their productivity (think Steve Jobs). I love this idea, especially for working moms!

Will anyone notice?

It’s kind of silly, but I was worried that the people around me would get tired of seeing the same thing over and over. I don’t think anyone has even noticed, and if they have, they certainly haven’t said anything. I wear what I love and I think people just associate it as “my look”. Accessories and makeup help mix it up, too!

Does the momiform always involve jeans or leggings?

Nope. It does not. If you love dresses (I do!), then find a few easy-to-throw-on dresses and make those your thing. I am really loving wide-legged linen pants this spring and have added a pair to my wardrobe. They go perfectly with all of my white blouses! Shorts, jumpsuits, skirts . . . if you love it, then go for it!

What about accessories?

Go for it! I love accessories as a way of finishing off your outfit and adding a little something extra. I wear my favorite jewelry every single day — just my wedding rings, diamond studs, and a vintage “Love” bracelet that was a gift from my husband. Earrings are a great way to add color and personality to any outfit, anything from bright tassels to classic pearls. Fun tote bags and backpacks are perfect for the beach or park. And don’t forget to add a swipe of bright lipstick!

Abbe W
Abbe is a wife and stay-at-home-mom of one sweet little toddler boy. Abbe moved from Wisconsin to Birmingham several years ago after marrying her husband, Josh. It didn't take long for her to fall in love with this new city and its mild winters! With her husband's job as a film producer, they take every chance they get to travel together as a family for work projects. She is always happy to come back to Birmingham, a place that feels like home. When she’s not packing or unpacking suitcases, Abbe is probably in her kitchen, baking and drinking one too many cups of coffee. Abbe also loves Jesus, coffee (did she already mention that?), being a boy-mom, and date nights with her husband.

  1. Love this idea! I’ve toyed around with the idea of a capsule wardrobe, work uniform, etc. But this seems a little more attainable with the same end goal. Thanks for sharing!
